The Presence of Peace

In the midst of the whirlwind of daily life, where responsibilities are endless and time feels scarce, finding true peace can often feel like chasing the wind. Yet, it’s in these very moments of chaos that the peace and joy of God, as described in Galatians 5:22-23, offers us a calm that is rooted not in what we do, but in who we are becoming in Him.

Every morning before all of my daily responsibilities flood my mind, I make it a priority to establish my peace through mindfulness and prayer. I make my way to my favorite window and let the sunshine hit my face and focus on my breathing. With every breath, I invite the presence of his peace and hold onto it the best I can along the day. With life comes many stages and, in those stages, whether you’re a student, career woman, mother, wife, or all of the above it can get difficult to prioritize all of the responsibilities and save time for yourself. We can get so busy that we miss out on the presence of Jesus forgetting that his very presence is the present we have. We say peace be still, but that’s exactly what we need to be sometimes in order to see him working in our lives.

In the heart of Galatians 5:22-23, we find joy and peace are more than fleeting concepts; they represent a deep, abiding sense of calm that flows from a relationship with God. This peace is not tied to our circumstances but is rooted in our connection with Christ and the active presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Often, our schedules are filled with endless to-do lists, and we mistakenly equate busyness and achievement with spiritual growth. While accomplishing goals may appear to reflect spiritual fruitfulness, it’s not a true measure of our faith. True spiritual fruit is not defined by our activity or success but by the transformation of our character and our journey toward becoming more like Christ.

If not careful, we can fill our lives with spiritual responsibilities, yet still feel restless and anxious if we’re not grounded in the peace that the Holy Spirit offers. Here’s how we can focus on bearing real spiritual fruit rather than getting caught up in an illusion:

1. Prioritize Time with God: Make intentional time to be still before God, to pray, and to meditate on His Word. This time allows the Holy Spirit to work in your heart, nurturing the fruits of the spirit.

2. Assess Your Motivations: Examine why you’re doing what you’re doing. Are your actions driven by a genuine love for God and others, or are they motivated by a desire for recognition?

3. Embrace Rest: God calls us to rest, both physically and spiritually. Taking time to rest is not unproductive; it’s a necessary part of walking in the Spirit. In rest, we learn to trust God’s timing and provision.

4. Practice Being Present: Instead of rushing from one task to another, practice being fully present in the moment. This allows you to genuinely connect with others and to experience the joy, and peace that the Holy Spirit is cultivating in you.

5. Simplify Your Life: Sometimes, we need to simplify our schedules to create more space for God and for the people and activities that truly matter. This might mean saying no to good things so you can say yes to the best things—those that truly align with God’s will for your life.

In a culture that glorifies busyness and achievements, let’s remember that the true measure of spiritual fruitfulness is not how much we do but how deeply we love, how consistently we experience joy, and how peacefully we live. Doesn’t that sound more like the abundant life God promised us? Walking in the Spirit means allowing God to work within us, producing these fruits that reflect His character. As we focus less on what we’re doing and more on who we’re becoming in Christ, we’ll find that the presence of love, joy, and peace in our lives is the real evidence of a Spirit-filled life.
